The Effects of SBAR-Based Effective Communication Training on Nursing Students' Knowledge Regarding Handover Implementation
Keywords:

Incidents in the handover process often originate from disruptions or errors in communication among nurses, which can ultimately threaten the continuity of nursing care for patients. One structured solution to address this issue is the implementation of the SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation) communication method. This study aimed to analyze the effects of effective communication training using the SBAR method on nursing students’ knowledge in conducting handover. This study employed a quasi-experimental design (pretest–posttest with control group) with a purposive sampling technique. A total of 60 respondents were divided evenly into an intervention group and a control group, with 30 participants in each group. The research instrument was a questionnaire on effective communication using the SBAR method, which had been tested for validity (calculated r 0.441–0.712 > r table 0.361) and reliability (Cronbach's Alpha 0.821, high category). Data analysis was performed using the general linear model–repeated measures test. The results showed that the mean knowledge score of the intervention group increased from 47.3 (pretest) to 95.6 (week 1), 99.6 (week 2), and 100 (week 3), whereas the control group decreased from 45 to 38 over the same period, with a significant training effect (p-value < .001). SBAR training is recommended to be implemented continuously in nursing education to support continuity of care and patient safety.
